What is the effective sensitization ?!

Hello, this is Global Bridge Network (GBN)! 

This time, we are going to introduce SORAK’s unique method of sensitization.

When we conduct activities in the community, what is the best way to sensitize them? 

In my case, I’ve forgot the contents of lecture very quickly … Also, I couldn’t try any action which I learnt actually… This challenge always happens in the community in Uganda…

Not to forget the contents that people have learnt and to make any action, SORAK is trying to use the unique method. 

One of this ways is… “ Song! ”

For example, TV commercial using songs may sometimes make people input sounds in their head. 

SORAK composes many songs and also create drama shows (performance) to sensitize social problems. 

The students of a primary school called Precious Child Learning Centre which SORAK owns, perform with singing those songs. They show many challenges thorough singing songs. 

We would like to introduce one of these beautiful performances which is to improve the school environment to combat Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) challenges to Stop Adolescent Girls’ School Dropouts.

“Once upon a time I remember the day was Monday I went to study at school but I dint know that it was my first time for menstruation period, we were in class both boys and girl children were questioned what had happened to me, even me I didn’t know for sure I did not know what had happened to me even at school there were no pads. I decided to use my hand kerchief and I went back at home. I was absurd I missed my lessons”.


The impact of being transmitted to other person will also change depending on the way of telling challenges. The greater the impact, the more it will lead to a change in behavior of that person.

Besides, SORAK conducts the drama show to sensitize HIV/AIDS.
There are a lot of unique and effective methods to sensitize community.

We are looking forward to seeing a new sensitization in next time!

Report on “Sub County based dialogue meetings on overcoming environmental degradation”

Hello, this is Global Bridge Network (GBN)!

This time, we are going to report on ‘Environmental Protection through Expanding Lemon grass growing and Education in Uganda’.

GBN’s partner, SORAK was able to conduct four Sub County based dialogue meetings with Sub county leaders on challenges and ways of overcoming environmental degradation from Sep 2nd, 2017 to Sep 9th, 2017.

At these dialogue meetings, participants discussed challenges and possible ways of overcoming environmental degradation.

The dialogue meetings were attended by a total of 200 participants from Kibalinga, Nabingoola, Kigando and Kasambya sub-counties. Each dialogue meeting was attended by a number of 50 participants.

The purpose of the training is as follows;
1. The importance of lemongrass growing as a measure to environmental conservation
2. The need for sub county involvement in environmental protection and their maximum efforts to environmental conservation approaches like lemon grass growing.

Participants were explained that lemon grass growing can help protect the soils from erosion. Besides, sub-county leaders were encouraged to put in place the environmental protection policies enforced by the district and to involve their communities in lemongrass growing in order to protect the environment from degradation and as well improve on their livelihood.

After this dialogue meeting, one of the participants mentioned as follows;

“We thank Japan Fund for Global Environment of the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency for supporting the dialogue that has opened our eyes on how to overcome environmental degradation by practicing lemon grass growing”.

Report on “School based environmental education and awareness campaigns”

Hello, this is Global Bridge Network (GBN)!

We are going to give a report of our ongoing project which is about ‘Environmental Protection through Expanding Lemon grass growing and Education in Uganda’.

SORAK, GBN’s partner NGO, conducted school based environmental education and awareness campaigns of at least 300 children per school, in around 16 schools from July 3^rd 2017 to July 31^st 2017.

The overall objective of the campaigns was to carry out and as well enable children to understand the importance of lemon grass growing and other ways of environmental conservation by informing them about the different ways of protection.

Contents covered of the campaigns

1. Display of rules in schools concerning environmental conservation
2. The children to know their role in protecting the environment
3. The need for children’s involvement in environmental conservation and capacity building towards environmental protection
4. Emphasize lemon grass growing as a good measure to environmental degradation

The campaigns provided an opportunity to SORAK in a way that, the school leading team and the children were able to discuss ways that can help conserve environment.　　　　　　　　　　　　

Engages the children in thorough discussions about environmental conservation

Explaining to the children how to grow lemon grass to protect the environment

Besides that, teachers pledged to display in classes the roles and importance of lemon grass growing. Children were well contented and realized the importance of lemon grass growing as a measure to environmental conservation.

After the campaign, one student stated as follows,

“This education has really opened my eyes as I didn’t know that lemon grass can not only protect the environment but as well can enable my parents to get money to buy me school scholastic materials.”

By sensitizing not only women and youth but also children, about environmental conservation and income generation through lemon grass growing, training can easily reach out to many other households.

Introduction of SORAK, our partner organization in Uganda♪

SORAK having a meeting with HIV/AIDS women group

We would like to introduce our partner local organization in Uganda, SORAK(Strategic Organization for real Acton -Kampala  (SORAK) Development Agency. SORAK and Global Bridge Network (GBN) has been conducting “Improvement of school environment to combat Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) challenges to Stop Adolescent Girls’ School Dropouts in Uganda” and “Environmental Protection through Expanding Lemon grass growing and Education in Uganda “since 2017.

SORAK was started in 2003, following a study conducted in rural Mubende district about the effects and causes of wife battering. SORAK therefore, initially started by addressing issues of gender-based violence as HIV/AIDs.

By 2010, SORAK had extended its scope and actively implemented projects in the areas of ; advocacy, livelihood, environment and agriculture, water and sanitation, education, community mobilization and capacity building, children, women and persons with disabilities (PWDs) rights promotion and protection within the framework of the named project and activities.

Vision: Improved quality of life for vulnerable women, youth and children in Uganda.

Mr. Muhammad Kyeyune who established SORAK, the Executive Director. 

A social worker, educationist and a social entrepreneur holds an MBA (HRM), BA(SWSA), Diploma in Education and Diploma in Rights Based approach and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights-

Muhammad has got special bias in the areas of Organizational development and assessment, Documentation and Report writing, Project Design and management-with a niche in proposal/grant writing and business planning, Community development and mobilization, conducting socio-economic and baseline surveys, Conducting sensitization and awareness campaigns, Advocacy and lobbying, Conducting project evaluations and Evaluations, Developing Institutional Promotional Materials, Designing community based monitoring and evaluation systems(CBMES), strategic planning, Mainstreaming and analysing gender issues Disability and HIV/AIDS.

 Here is the message from Mr. Muhammad about his motivation to manage SORAK as follows.

“For the past 15 years, I have had a strong concern for the living conditions of the rural communities in Mubende district. This is an area in which I was born and raised. Through my studies at the university and my practice as a teacher as well as a social worker and human resource management specialist I have come to learn that it is possible to alleviate the problems of; human rights abuse, poor health, gender based violence, sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB), environmental degradation, poor sanitation and hygiene, poor education and lack of employable skills, low incomes and poverty through well designed and meaningful focused intervention programs. 

The challenge to the creation and operation of these programs, however, is twofold. First, there does not exist the required resources and funding to assist the vulnerable communities in improving their situation. And second, there has not existed a community pro-poor focused approach to assist in delivering the necessary and relevant intervention in a timely and meaningful manner.

Research suggests that the most powerful way to affect the wellbeing of the poor rural communities, is through the improved understanding of the situation that precipitate poverty and suffering. Muhammad through SORAK is motivated and driven by the desire to assist rural poor communities in the local community location, close to where the poor and the suffering are living.”

SORAK's Programmers Manager

Hadijah Nakiruuta, Programmes Manager in SORAK as well as our sister; holds a Degree of Bachelor of Community and Adult education. She has four years’ experience in community work mainly in youth and HIV/AIDS related programmes for both in-school and out-of-school youth among other livelihood projects in Mubende.

She has also worked with single and HIV and AIDS widowed mothers as well as Commercial Sex Workers. She has good Negotiation skills, Computer skills, Leadership & Management skills and public relation skills, Analytical skills, Administration and management skills, Lobbying and Advocacy skills.

 Here the message from Ms.Hadijah about her motivation working in SORAK as follows.

“For the past 4 years of working with SORAK Development Agency, I have gotten a chance of working closely with vulnerable women and adolescent girls and this is where my passion lies.

Mostly women and girls are subjected to gender based violence and on a large extent gender based violence affects women and girls so always my major focus is on empowering women economically for them to be able to start some income generating activities with a reason of promoting economic independence among women and am happy that women are now operating small businesses and having livelihood stock businesses and am happy that I always mentor them.

Another thing I like is working with adolescent girls giving them career guidance plus building their capacity for them to defend themselves from sexual abuses and exploitation.

Currently the major challenge that I face and SORAK at large during the course of implementation is the scope of coverage. Many other vulnerable persons always express the urgent need for our intervention but we are always limited by funds to cover wider geographical scope.

I thank our partners for the support they provide to see that the quality of life among our rural vulnerable persons in Mubende is improved.”

We believe SORAK deeply understand local people’s needs since they work close to the communities. Their activities are so passionate and serious; therefore GBN can trust them to work together. We can’t achieve our projects success in Uganda without their efforts.
